Steam Tractors

5 Ton Steam Tractors

  • In 1904 the UK Government permitted light steam tractors under 5 tons unladen weight to use the highways.
  • The new regulations allowed such engines to be driven by one man and to haul only one trailer not exceeding 1 ½ tons weight at up to 14mph.
  • Marshalls were slower to enter this market than their competitors and it was not until 1911 that their first 5 tons tractor No. 57967 appeared at the Smithfield Show.
  • In 1912 a similar engine No. 59508 was exhibited at the Royal Show at Doncaster.

From 1911 to 1930 a total of 90 light steam tractors were built with the peak production being in the 12 months before WW1.
